I started the upgrade from build 10 to 11 and have hit the following difficulty.

During the install, it seemed to hang on the dialog involving the license file management (don't remember the title now) and after about a half hour, I aborted the install, thinking I would start it again after deleting Build 10 from my machine.

Now the initiation of Build 11 Professional install fails with a dialog that says I need to remove a backup license file.

Where is this file located? There is nothing in the VistaDB folder except a subfolder for Visual Studio and in there is the file LicenseManager.exe dated 12/31/2009.

Vista says I can't delete this file. Control Panel Remove Programs thinks that VistaDB has now been deleted.

At the moment, I have deleted VistaDb Build 10, and can't install VistaDB Build 11 so I am grounded.

Please help.

Thank you.

Oh Boy! But problem solved.

When powering down for the night, I discovered a dialog hidden behind a couple of other Windows asking me to use an existing professional license that it had found. I clicked Yes. Then proceeded with a new install of Build 11.

Working fine now.

Any way to get that popup window to show up on top?

Thanks

I had that problem with an earlier build, but thought it had been solved.

Work-around: When it seemas to have hung, press ALT-TAB a few times to see if there is a hidden dialog.

Nope. We already set it to the TOPMOST window in the system. Sometimes Windows 7 and Vista both through the topmost window to the back window. I have seen it, and we have worked through a host of ways trying to get Windows to always put it on top. It seems to be a timing thing with windows messages or something.

We even tried showing it, hiding it, reshowing it. Then we tried to show it, minimize, then restore thinking that would always force it.

It is very weird, and only happens sometimes (I hate those).

The best thing is to only have 1 window open during install so you can see the other when it comes back. Shhh <jk>

I have seen it where minimizing the setup and going off to do something else, then you come back and click on setup to restore and it will sometimes show it correctly. It is weird.

We are reworking the license manager in 4.1 to not even be done during setup.

To add to the variability . . . when it happened to me, I was using dual monitors. The VistaDB install screens were on the external monitor, the License dialog was hidden behind others on the laptop window.

Yes, the Windows 7 window manager will bring a new window wherever your mouse is at the time it is shown... That is always fun. I do that too, and it drives me nuts with open dialogs appearing on my second monitor because my mouse was over there when they launched.
